Underpinning and Rebuilding an Insufficient footer:
Sometimes we look on the things that were built “back in the day” and find them to be much better made than what we get now, and sometimes that’s simply not the case. On this old home, the builder did not pour the footer below the frost line. This lead to heaving during the warmer/wetter months and sinking during the colder/dryer ones. Not only was the footer insufficient, the brickwork above was not tied together strongly enough to support the attempt to lift the structure back to plumb. We drove five helical piers, one of which was in the crawlspace! After we repaired the brickwork we lifted the structure back to plumb and casted a new footer underneath to prevent any future movement!
